This platform is operated as part of the AI-EmpaTe project, co-funded by the European Union. The project develops open educational resources on the use of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning.

2. What Data We Collect

2.1 Account Registration

When you create an account, we store the following data in our database:

  • Nickname — your chosen display name
  • Email address — used for login, not shared publicly
  • Country
  • Role — whether you identify as a teacher
  • Password — stored only as a secure one-way hash (bcrypt); we cannot read your password
  • Registration date — timestamp recorded automatically at sign-up

2.2 Course Progress

When you mark a section of a course as completed, we record this in our database alongside your user identifier, the course module number, the section identifier, and the timestamp of completion. This data is used solely to display your progress within the course.

2.3 Data We Do Not Collect

We do not collect or process:

  • Passwords or payment data
  • Data from third-party advertising platforms

3. Cookies

3.1 Session Cookie (Essential)

When you log in, your browser receives a standard PHP session cookie (PHPSESSID). This cookie contains only a random session identifier — no personal data. It is used exclusively to keep you logged in during your visit and is deleted when you close your browser or log out. This cookie is strictly necessary for the service to function and does not require consent.

3.2 Language Preference Cookie

This site offers an optional page translation feature powered by Google Translate. If you use it, Google may set a googtrans cookie to remember your language selection. This cookie is reset at the start of each new session. The translation widget is provided by Google LLC; please refer to Google's Privacy Policy for details on how Google processes data through this service.

3.3 No Tracking or Marketing Cookies

We do not use any analytics, advertising, or tracking cookies.

4. Legal Basis for Processing

We process your personal data on the following legal bases under GDPR:

  • Contract performance — account data is necessary to provide you with access to the course platform.
  • Legitimate interests — course progress data is stored to provide continuity across sessions.

5. Data Retention

Your account and progress data are retained for as long as your account is active. You may request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time by contacting us. We will process such requests within 30 days.

6. Data Security

All data is stored in a MySQL database hosted on a server within the EU. Passwords are hashed using bcrypt and are never stored or transmitted in plain text. Access to the database is restricted to authorised project team members.

7. Your Rights (GDPR)

Under the General Data Protection Regulation, you have the right to:

  • Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
  • Rectification — ask us to correct inaccurate data
  • Erasure — request deletion of your account and data
  • Restriction — ask us to limit how we use your data
  • Portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format
  • Objection — object to processing based on legitimate interests
